Several months ago while in the USA I watched the movie “127 Hours” which is the story of Aron Ralston. My husband and I were fortunate to actually meet Aron who was at the theatre to promote the movie of the story of how he survived having his arm wedged between a rock and a hard place in the Canyonlands of Utah USA.

Long story short he was stuck there for 5 days with no hope of rescue as he hadn’t told anyone exactly where he would be. Of course, over this period he had plenty of time to consider his position and he worked extremely hard to extricate himself from his predicament.

Unfortunately, he had omitted to take the Swiss Army Knife which he usually carried and instead had a very poor imitation multi-tool with which to work on the rock. The rope he was carrying was to be used for abseiling and consequently was inappropriate for using to somehow move the very large boulder – even though he had a very good try at doing so.

Since he was only intending to be gone for the day, he had taken very little in the way of food and water, so he quickly decided on the need to ration what he did have. During the time he was trapped he began to hallucinate. What I found very interesting was the fact that even though he was in a situation where there was very little hope of being rescued or discovered and he was staring down the barrel of death his hallucinations were what eventually propelled him to do what he had to in order to be saved.

It is my understanding that most people have flashbacks at such a time and they see their past flash before their eyes – Not so for Aron; he saw his future! He saw a young boy who he knew to be his son (he had no children then) and that spurred him to making the only decision which would ultimately release him from the canyon and give him the best chance of surviving his ordeal.

That decision was to cut his own arm off! This was not so easy either as all he had was the very blunt knife with the multi-tool. He also had the job of breaking the 2 bones in his forearm as he would not have been able to hack through the bone to release himself. He finally was able to free himself from his prison in the canyon, but he then had to hike out to where he could be rescued……and this entailed him abseiling down a steep cliff one handed.

Now; why have I told you this story?

Well I have been pondering this scenario and wondering if I would have been able to do what Aron did. I doubt it. However I have been likening this story to what it takes to establish a business and more particularly an on-line business, and I have to ask – DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES and ARE YOU WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY to free yourself from the 9 to 5 grind of the work-a-day world?
